| SIG stands
for Special Interest Group. A Special Interest Group is a subgroup
of the chapter's membership that shares a common interest in a specific
area of training and development. Special interest groups are the
lifeblood of many ASTD chapters. SIGs provide unique opportunities
for networking with members who share interest or expertise in a
specific area.
How Do They Work?
Let's say that you are a trainer who conducts diversity training
and you would like to meet and share experiences with other trainers
who conduct diversity courses. A Diversity SIG can help you do that.
Within that SIG, people who are involved with workforce diversity
can get together, share ideas, relay experiences, exchange resources,
and gain insight into an aspect of their careers with greater potential
for obtaining knowledge.
What Exactly Do SIGs Do?
That's up to the SIG. The members decide what their goals are and
the best way to achieve them. A SIG could be primarily discussion
based (where members join together to receive information or join
together to present information).
You Can Get Involved!
Currently, the ASTD Nebraska Chapter SIGs are all inactive. In the past we have offered the following SIGs:
*If you are interested in reactivating any of these SIGs, please email Director of SIGs.
You
are encouraged to participate in any of these SIGs if they interest you, or
create your own. For information on how to start a Special Interest
Group, contact VP
of Programming or Director
of SIGs.
ASTD Needs
YOU to be a SIG Leader. What is a SIG Leader, you ask? A SIG
Leader is someone who is willing to commit two to four hours per
month to facilitating a Special Interest Group and providing successful
networking opportunities for fellow ASTD members who share a common
interest. Typical SIG Leader duties are:
- Coordinating an agenda
- Negotiating a meeting place
- Sending out meeting notices
- Facilitating a meeting
- Communicating with the VP of SIGs
And, most importantly, assisting
the Special Interest Group in meeting its goals and objectives.
Please
consider becoming a SIG Leader.
It promises to be a rewarding experience!
